A few words about our Past President, Marion Meyers;

My Quilt Story
In July of 2002 I was visiting with family north of Quebec City. All of my Aunt Ruth’s children and spouses and grandchildren were there. While we told stories, sang songs and looked over photo albums, my cousin Julie, the youngest of my generation of cousins, kept her hands busy doing hand appliqué. I was sucked right in.
My first day back to work I got a call from Karen Ault. It was purely coincidental that I told her all about my fabulous trip to Quebec and getting reacquainted with this great family of cousins, including Julie. Then Karen said, “Well yah know, we’ve got a quilt guild right here in Port Perry and the best way to learn to quilt is to go up to the Quilter’s Cupboard in Uxbridge.” That was it – there was no stopping me.
I signed up for the beginner’s class the fall of 2002 and borrowed a friend’s machine. After the first class I went back to buy more fabric and got two quilts going at once. I attended my first guild meetings the fall of 2002. And JOY! Richard bought me a sewing machine for Christmas!
Quilter’s Cupboard had provided me with numerous classes since then with many wonderful teachers; hand quilting, machine quilting, Irish Chain, Hunter’s Star, bags and everything under the sun in Sherri Hisey’s Quilting Bee’s Club Class, which I joined in the fall of 2005. I’ve attended every guest workshop we’ve had at the guild. My favourites are varied; art quilts with Christine Fries-Ureel, curves with Maggie Vandeweit, Square in a Square with Jodi Barrows and fabric dying with Gunnel Haag. Quilter’s Cupboard does both a spring and fall retreat at Elim Lodge and I’ve gone to every one in the fall since 2003 and managed to make one spring one. I love the atmosphere! Sue Carmicheal asked me to be her Vice-President at the guild just as I was barely catching on to quilting. I served as President from February 2006 to June 2008 (longer than usual because we changed our membership term) I ended up doing a lot of the job of Program Coordinator because no one stepped up and now it’s official as Sue and I share that job. My quilt journey continues as I try to find the time to do more artistic work.
Richard is a lawyer who finds as much time as possible to play guitar in no fewer than four bands so he’s often at rehearsals, gigs or in the recording studio. Nicolette, our youngest daughter, has me on the road to dance classes, rehearsals and competitions; she too plays guitar, sings and is growing into her song writing. Our eldest daughter Caitlin is our academic; an Archeologist with aspirations to do her graduate studies in England after a year of teaching English in Japan. We all love to hit the slopes, preferably at Whistler/Blackcomb and to travel wherever there are wild drives, museums with mummies or modern art, ruins or city streets full of cafes.
Specific Duties of the Past President:
- Shall chair a meeting in the absence of the President and Vice-President, and shall;
- Support Guild operations; and
- Advise and support the Executive as required.
